UPDATE ON UKRAINE by Jeff Franks for The Baptist Trumpet.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine takes a surprising turn from time to time, but of late it seems frozen, both militarily and politically, to say nothing of soldiers struggling to stay warm on the front lines. Reports of artillery, tank, and missile barrages, deaths and injuries continue to trickle in every day.

Since September 5, a cease-fire has been in effect in Eastern Ukraine. However, since then 93 civilians have died, and countless soldiers on both sides. I have read impossible to verify, conflicting reports of thousands of Russian soldiers who have died in this conflict. To say nothing of the grieving Ukrainian families, Russian families cannot even publicize the real reasons for their sorrow without incurring the displeasure of the state, which continues to deny their involvement. Therefore, please continue to keep both Russia and Ukraine in your prayers.

The protracted conflict is taking a huge toll on Ukraine at large. With the coldest months of the winter still ahead, exhausted coal supplies are forcing electric power brown-outs and black-outs throughout the country. The Hryvna, the Ukrainian national currency, has lost 40 percent of its value over the last several months. Elderly and handicapped pensioners are paying a third or more of their pension just to stay warm. Though food prices tend to lag behind inflation, the relentlessly rising numbers still create “sticker shock” as they take a larger percentage of the monthly pay check. I have no doubt Russian families are suffering in a similar manner.

The Baptist churches of Ukraine have responded in encouraging ways. Within the last week, the Baptist Union of Ukraine has held vision and planning meetings for a coordinated response to the crisis. They are focusing primarily on prayer, benevolence, and evangelism to the more than 100,000 displaced persons from the Donetsk and Luhansk provinces. A recent outreach to the nearby Ivankov region has resulted in many saved with Bible study groups forming. Please pray that this effort will result in new churches planted!

How are the churches doing inside the conflict zone? A recent report to the Baptist World Alliance stated: “Amid shelling and tanks moving through the streets, Christians hold prayer meetings in the city parks and squares, establish centers of free psychological and medical assistance, host, feed, and dress the refugees.” Only heaven sees and records the stories of their faith and sacrifice.
Author Chris Tiegreen once wrote, “We live in a broken world, partly of our own doing, and we suffer because of it. But we rejoice that the suffering does not compare to the glory to be revealed (Rom 8:18).” How true!

I hope you have derived some prayer points from this article. I think you know well that the current unrest is part of God’s plan to show his incredible faithfulness to his chosen people in the last days, and to all who seek a relationship with him through his Son, Jesus Christ. “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning. Great is Your faithfulness!” (Lamentations 3:22,23)

WHAT RICHES YANUKOVICH LEFT BEHIND

From living in a Kiev apartment to riches beyond imagination.  Here's what Victor Yanukovich, past President of Ukraine stole from the people. Please continue to pray for this country as it wades through the muck and mire of setting up a new government.  Pray that the country does not split and that Russia does not interfere.

BOTANICAL GARDENS, KIEV, UKRAINE

Not long ago my husband Jeff and I did something we so rarely do.  We took a full day off and away from home.  We went to the botanical gardens in Kyiv (Kiev) where we'd been once in spring and once too many years ago.  In the spring there was a wonderful sculpture art exhibition.  It wasn't wonderful because I loved the art so much as I was so happy to see something like this going on.  There were so many people walking around the park and enjoying the pieces.  The botanical garden in Kyiv (one of two) is very big with a lake and many different kinds of gardens.  It's too big to explore in one day.
Looking at the city across the river from the gardens to part of the city in the distance.
This church is on the edge of the park. They had a beautiful garden on their grounds as well.
My sweetie, Jeff, doing his thing.  He loves photography and diligently studies it for a hobby.  See his Facebook page for lots of beautiful pics:  Jeff Franks Ukraine, to find him.
One of the sculptures.  Rather Stalinesk, but interesting to see how people's minds work.  You can see there are hills in the park too.  Come visit and we'll take you there.

HORSE DRAWN WAGON IN UKRAINE

For some in Ukraine this is the only mode of transportation. I snapped this in September on our road just across the street from our home. I always think it is quaint when I see a horse and wagon, but I am also reminded of how difficult the life is here for many. In 17 years in Ukraine we see less and less of these wagons, but it does not mean life has gotten easier. Their's is a life of toil and difficulties. All the more reason for the need of hope, the need of understanding a future in heaven. It is why we are here. We thank God that He has given us a small part to play in spreading the Hope of his Word to the nations.

TRAINING IN WESTERN UKRAINE

I am writing you now from western Ukraine. I have had the blessing of accompanying Jeff on this training because it is in Ukraine and we drove, arriving a couple days early. I"ll be updating this week. The topic for this week is "Prayerful Planning in the Christian Life."

This is a lovely spot we traveled to before our first day of training. The tiny folks in the picture is part of the class.

If it weren't so cold we'd hear the sound of this river from our hotel that is across the street. Fortunately for us, they are heating. Cold here in the mountains, but beautiful. These following pictures were taken on a morning walk before all particpants had yet arrived for the training.

A pretty spot. This was at one of those touristy places that are too expensive for our group, but that didn't keep us from walking and enjoying their grounds.

Vintage Ukrainian gem we spotted on the way.

Check out another vintage item.

Ukrainian Winters

Winter in Ukraine looks much like winter in Arkansas today. This photo is Ukraine. We are used to the snow like this, but we also have snow tires and a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

Winter in Ukraine

Here's the big tree that fell on our garage from the heavy snows this winter. If you look way up in the top of the left tree(upper picture)you can see the whiite where it broke off. You can also see how it damaged the tree down below it. The amazing thing is how God protected us. If we'd have been home then the tree would have landed on our car. The bend in the tree caused it to fall arching over our picket fence and doing NO damage. It did poke a small hole in the garage roof and we had to change out a couple panels and one of the facing boards, but that was it. We were praising God for his mercy on us. Now we only have two more trees to be concerned about, but we are trusting in Him.
